The WGAT California Tour made its
stop in San Diego at the beautiful Rancho Bernardo Golf and Resort. With
golfers showing up from as far as Texas to compete for their spot into the
National Championship and earn their way onto Team USA.
Bill Ault of
Fountain Valley California was in the first group and jump out to an early lead
with a gross birdie on hole 3 par 5 for a net 2!! He maintained his lead all the way up till
hole 13 a par 3 where he drop 4 shots to be in a tie for first. Richard Mcdaniel was able to see the leader
board through the live scoring provided via his smartphone and after seeing he
was back in it he put the pedal to the medal. Recording a net par on the next 3 holes to put
him on top of the leaderboard while the rest of the field felt the pressure of
earning that exemption. Richard noticing
he was in the lead from his smartphone choose to play it safe and protect his
lead on hole 16 by pulling out 3 wood instead of driver. It almost cost him the tournament. He hook his shot from the tee box out of
bounds and played a second ball under penalty.
So hitting 4 from the fairway from 200 yards he nearly holed it and tap
it a gross 5 for a net 4!!! This gave him the confidence to finish out the next
two holes to win the Victory Open 1 by 2 shots over Tournament Director Jeff
Ault. Congratulations to Richard on his
come from behind win and earning back to back wins to earn a total of 400 merit
points.
